HAPPY"Dhanteras" 29 October 2024:

A Celebration of Wealth, Health, and Prosperity
As the festival season approaches,
Hindus around the world eagerly prepare for the five-day celebration of Diwali, and the first day of this joyous occasion is Dhanteras.

In 2024, Dhanteras will be celebrated on 29 October, marking the beginning of a festival filled with lights, joy, and prosperity. Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, is deeply rooted in ancient traditions and is considered an auspicious day for buying gold, silver, and new utensils. Let's explore the significance of Dhanteras 29 October 2024 and how it continues to be celebrated with grandeur and reverence.

The Origin and Significance of Dhanteras:

Dhanteras holds a special place in the Hindu calendar. The word "Dhanteras" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Dhan," meaning wealth, and "Teras," referring to the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) in the month of Kartik. Hence, Dhanteras 29 October 2024 is the day that symbolises the worship of wealth and prosperity.

The day is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari,

the god of Ayurveda, who is believed to have emerged from the ocean during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan). He is revered as the divine physician and healer, and it is believed that on Dhanteras, Lord Dhanvantari bestows good health, longevity, and wealth upon his devotees. Therefore, Dhanteras 29 October 2024 will not only be a day for buying material possessions but also a day to seek blessings for good health and well-being.

Rituals and Traditions of Dhanteras:

On Dhanteras 29 October 2024, homes and businesses will be meticulously cleaned and decorated to welcome prosperity. People believe that a clean home attracts the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, who blesses households with abundance. Rangolis, beautiful designs made with coloured powders, will adorn the entrances of homes, while oil lamps or diyas will be lit to ward off negative energies and bring in positive vibrations.

One of the most significant traditions associated with Dhanteras 29 October 2024 is the purchase of gold, silver, or new utensils. This practice is considered highly auspicious, as it is believed that these items symbolise wealth and will attract more prosperity in the coming year.

Jewellery stores, markets, and online platforms will be bustling with people looking to make their purchases, as buying something new on this day is seen as a harbinger of good fortune.

Apart from material wealth, Dhanteras is also a time to prioritise health. Many households perform prayers dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, seeking his blessings for physical and mental well-being.

In many parts of India, people also observe the custom of preparing herbal remedies and Ayurvedic concoctions on Dhanteras 29 October 2024, honouring the ancient knowledge of healing.

Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras:

The evening of Dhanteras 29 October 2024 will witness the grand Lakshmi Puja, a significant ritual where families come together to worship Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi visits the earth, and by offering prayers and lighting lamps, devotees can attract her blessings into their homes.

During the Lakshmi Puja, people place idols or pictures of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, on a clean altar. The rituals involve the offering of sweets, flowers, incense, and other sacred items to the deities, followed by the recitation of prayers and mantras.

The lighting of diyas (earthen lamps)

both inside and outside the home is an essential part of the Puja, symbolising the triumph of light over darkness and the arrival of prosperity.

The Story of King Hima and the Significance of Dhanteras:

One of the most well-known legends associated with Dhanteras 29 October 2024 is the story of King Hima. According to ancient mythology, it was predicted that King Hima’s son would die from a snakebite on the fourth day of his marriage.

To prevent this tragedy, the young bride placed all her gold and silver jewellery at the entrance of their chamber and lit several lamps around it. She spent the entire night singing hymns and keeping her husband awake.

When Yama, the god of death, arrived in the form of a serpent, the dazzling lights and shimmering metals blinded him, and he could not enter the chamber. Instead, Yama sat outside listening to the wife’s prayers, and by morning, he left without taking the life of King Hima’s son.

This story signifies that the lighting of lamps and the acquisition of precious metals on Dhanteras 29 October 2024 are believed to ward off evil spirits and death.

Modern-Day Celebrations of Dhanteras:

While the traditional aspects of Dhanteras 29 October 2024 remain intact, modern celebrations have taken on new dimensions. With the rise of e-commerce, many people now opt to purchase gold, silver, and other valuables online, taking advantage of festive discounts and offers.

Financial investments, such as buying stocks, mutual funds, or even property, are also considered auspicious on Dhanteras, symbolising a modern approach to growing wealth.

In addition to the religious and financial significance, Dhanteras 29 October 2024 will also be a time for family gatherings, festive meals, and the exchange of gifts. Many people host parties or get-togethers to share the joy of the occasion, fostering a sense of togetherness and community.
